The No Guitar Blues

Author: Gary Soto

Summary: Fausto, who dreams of becoming a rock star after seeing Los Lobos on American Bandstand, wants a guitar. When his mother reminds him of the expense, Fausto decides to earn the money; he bikes to a suburb nearby to look for work. As he sits disconsolately at a curb, he notices a playful terrier wandering about. He reads the address on its tag and returns the dog to its owners, concocting a story about having found their pet near the freeway. The owners are grateful and press a twenty dollar bill into his hand. Seized by guilt over his deception, Fausto attends mass the following morning and resolves his inner conflict by dropping the money into the collection plate. Later his mother tells him that she has found her father's old guitarron in the garage and offers it to Fausto, reawakening his dreams of a guest spot on American Bandstand.
